Teens & Parents: Share Your Views for a Global Report on Social Media & Mental Health

2/10/2025

(An Initiative by The Archewell Foundation)

Vancouver DPAC is excited to announce a unique opportunity for teens and parents/caregivers to contribute to an international report on the impact of social media on youth well-being. The Archewell Foundation (the nonprofit organization founded by Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex) is leading this initiative, and Vancouver DPAC is assisting by inviting participation from teens and parents/caregivers in our community.

Representatives from The Archewell Foundation will be in Vancouver from February 12-16, 2025, hosting in-person insight sessions at a centrally located, transit-accessible venue.

Why Your Voice Matters
These small-group discussions will allow youth to share their experiences with the digital world—how it influences their lives, their mental health, and what changes they wish to see. Separate sessions will also be available for parents to voice their perspectives. The Archewell Foundation is seeking participants who represent a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences.

Key Details:
  • Sessions are about 2 hours long.
  • Food and snacks will be provided.
  • Teen sessions will be grouped by age (Parental consent is required for youth under 18).
  • Participants’ contributions are kept anonymous, and all information is held with strict data privacy standards.
The insights gathered will contribute to a global report on youth well-being in the digital age, making this an incredible opportunity to help shape the conversation on digital safety and mental health.

How to Participate
If you and/or your teen want to find out more or to take part, complete the brief form below to list your availability. (No obligation: This won’t commit you to participating.)

Click here to complete the form.

Not available in person? No problem! On the form, you can also express your interest in a future online session to share your views.

Get Involved & Make a Difference
This is your chance to influence a global conversation on the well-being of our youth in a world dominated by digital technology. Sharing your views can help make the digital space safer and healthier for the next generation.

DPAC message from the Chair

2/10/2025

Hello everyone !

As we step into February, we are grateful for the incredible work happening at Vancouver DPAC. At our January General Meeting, the amazing presentations from our working groups showcased their dedication to improving education for all students. This is a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when we come together with a shared purpose, and it’s exciting to see the progress we’re making as a collective.

This coming month, we’re excited to share our progress in strengthening communication within the district. We are thrilled to unveil the first-ever Vancouver DPAC Communication Plan, which will guide our collective efforts to engage, inform, and empower parents and caregivers moving forward.

With Valentine's Day and Family Day just around the corner, our theme for February is Mental Wealth and Digital Safety. These holidays remind us of the importance of connection—whether through love, friendship, or family.  We’ll be sharing tips on helping students build healthy online relationships and prioritize their mental well-being in the digital age.

A special thank you to Deborah Stern Silver, one of our DPAC Executives from Hamber Secondary School, for her collaboration with The Archewell Foundation. Through this very exciting initiative, the Foundation will provide small group input sessions for Vancouver students and parents/caregivers navigating the digital landscape. The Foundation’s sessions (link here) will be a fantastic opportunity for parents and students to share their experiences and gain insight into creating a healthier digital environment.

We also extend our gratitude to the parents at Queen Mary Elementary and Vancouver Technical Secondary for leading social media and mental health initiatives at their schools. We’ll share more at the upcoming February General Meeting.

As we reflect on the importance of connection this month, let’s remember the power of coming together as a community. When we support one another, whether online or in person, we help foster an environment where our students can thrive, both mentally and emotionally.

In the spirit of community and support, we invite you to take action: This newsletter features several important initiatives. Please share the contents of this newsletter with your PACs and consider adding these items to your meeting agenda.

Thank you to the many parents and caregivers who contribute to Vancouver DPAC in a variety of ways—whether by logging into our website, joining working groups, or taking on a representative role. Together, we are building a stronger, more connected community for our children and families.

Warm regards,
Melanie Cheng
Chair, Vancouver DPAC

Deepening our Understanding of Emotion Regulation – Supporting our Young People with their Big Emotions.
February 12 @1830 PM Have you ever found yourself looking at your child’s emotional outburst and thinking, “What the heck is happening?” or “This doesn’t make any sense,” or “What on earth are they so upset about – it’s not that big a deal?”  If so, you are certainly not alone!  Many parents describe feeling as though they’re walking on eggshells or avoiding taking their children out in fear of an emotional ‘meltdown’ which can be embarrassing, upsetting, and can lead to some pretty big emotions for the grown ups as well. If this sounds like you, or like someone you care about, please join us for an evening filled with information about what can lead to big emotions and for some concrete strategies for responding skillfully to those situations.  Nicole will join us live on Zoom to lead us through an evening of learning which will expand upon some key points including: Understanding emotion dysregulation as a skills deficit, and identifying strategies to grow those skills. How to anticipate when big emotions will occur, and exploring specific skills for responding to it. Understanding how the principle of attunement can be a roadmap for finding solutions that will work for you and your family. Hoping for the best, planning for the worst – so that everyone knows what to expect. How to repair the relationship when it’s all gone wrong. Please join us live online for an evening filled with information, reflection, and no doubt a good amount of laughter as well.
