We offer a free after-school math programming for students who identify as girls and non-binary.
When: 3:45 PM to 4:45 PM on Wednesdays. Dates: April 16th to June 18th Where: Kitsilano Neighbourhood House (2305 W 7th Ave) High school girls will mentor participants with the goal of increasing confidence in math. Our program is aimed at 3rd graders, but 2nd and 4th graders can still participate. By using fun games, art, music and physical activity to teach skip counting and multiplication techniques, we bring a unique approach to learning math. We ask that you note that 3rd graders will be given priority if we receive too many registrations. Please visit our website for more information: https://www.girlstothepowerofmath.org/. GOAL: To bridge the gender gap in STEM. The program was developed from research that Loran Fellow Alexa Bailey, founder of Girls to the Power of Math, conducted with UBC professor Dr. Toni Schmader. The research showed that math confidence in BC elementary schools declines disproportionately among girls, not boys. In keeping with the current view of education, Girls to the Power of Math aims to provide the mentoring needed to maintain women's excellence in STEM fields. Statistics Canada found that "among high school graduates, women are 29.8% less likely than men to enroll in a post-secondary STEM program shortly after graduation" (Ching et al., 2021). Our hope is to encourage a love of math early in girls' lives that will continue into adulthood.
