City of Vancouver Development Review and Urban Development staff and representatives from the Vancouver School Board Planning and Facilities Department joined the September 18, 2017 PAC meeting to update parents on the progress of the planning application for the new school. You can read all the development application documents on the City’s website. The City of Vancouver Planning Application Department is currently reviewing the development application. This involves collecting comments from the community and input from relevant city departments including traffic and urban design. Once the development application has been approved and a permit issued, a building permit application needs to be approved. No firm dates were given, but it is expected that the relevant permits could be issued by April 2018. At the meeting Tennyson parents raised a number of concerns about the new school which were addressed by the VSB and city panel. Below is a recap of some of the concerns discussed. Does the proposed new school meet the current and future needs of the community? In the Tennyson Project Definition Report the VSB states it is planning to redevelop the existing Lord Tennyson Elementary School and provide an entirely new school building on the existing site. The new school building will provide a capacity for 60 Kindergarten students and 375 grades 1 through 7 students, which is the same capacity as the existing school building. An out of school care component and a City of Vancouver Childcare centre (with a capacity for 69 children) will also form part of the new school building. Parents were concerned that the plan for the new school was based on three year old student enrollment projections that don’t take account of the revised class size and composition and increased density in the neighbourhood. The VSB representatives reported that the Ministry of Education’s priority is to build a seismically safe building and not to address capacity issues with our new school. It was also stated that going back to the Ministry to review the plans based on current data could/would delay the project by three years. Will there be enough out of school care spaces? The team from the VSB confirmed that there will be space to accommodate the same number of out of school care students that are accommodated at the current school (105 students, I believe). The plan is to accommodate the students in the modular buildings and in “flex space” in the new school building. There are no additional out of school care spaces in the current school plan. The daycare on the roof is a concern Safety and traffic concerns were voiced about the planned daycare on the roof. The VSB representatives suggested that different drop off and pick up times for the daycare will ease traffic. As well, the elevator to the daycare is in the main lobby of the school in clear sight of the office staff. How will traffic around the new school be managed? A comprehensive Traffic Management Plan has been created as part of the development application. It is being considered by the City’s development review team along with the other documentation. Read the report here. How do we have our say? Please send your comments about the new school (both concerns and positive feedback) to the City of Vancouver’s Development Project Application Project Facilitator, Troy Tenney, at troy.tenney@vancouver.ca The deadline for comment has been extended to September 25, 2017 A Lord Tennyson Seismic Committee has been created and you will be able to send your feedback to the committee via a parent representative shortly. As well, a survey will be sent to parents to collect comments and feedback. We will send out the survey as soon as it is created. The dates have been set for the Cross Country Mini Meets.
Races begin at 3:30pm. Wednesday, Sep 27 at Vanier Park (3:30pm) Monday, Oct 2 at Jericho East (3:30pm) Tuesday, Oct 10 at Balaclava Park (3:30pm) Quebec 2019 and C'est Mon Café (owned by Tennyson parents) will be serving Thursday lunches at Tennyson starting on Thu, Sep 28.
Ordering will not be through Munchalunch ... parents must order directly from the C'est Mon Café website. Here are some details:Website: www.cestmoncafe.com Thursday Hot Lunch service will be offered starting Sep 28 through Winter Break (you can order by the month or for the whole session). Look for the Tennyson button on their website. Review sample ordering form and then proceed to ordering. It is very important that you know (correctly!) your child's division number as meals will be delivered to individual division tables. Much confusion if the division is incorrect and maybe even hungry students. If you have allergy concerns, please contact Cest Mon Café via their website before placing your order. Questions? Please read their Q & A section on the website and then contact them (via their website) if your question is not answered. The ordering deadline for Sep 28 is Sep 26 at 8pm, but ordering in advance is better (thank you). C'est Mon Cafe DOES NOT send lunch reminder emails so please check your dates (especially if you are only ordering for one month). CHECK & KEEP your order receipts sent by PayPal (after order has been successfully processed). These receipts (called Order Confirmation Emails) will show the lunch dates/meals ordered for your children. If you only order for a month, be sure to order again for the next month or send your child with a lunch. Hungry children are unhappy children! Please refer to their website for lots of great information about what is offered, prices, how to change orders, cancel orders, ordering deadlines, what to do if your child does not receive their meal, etc. Finally, if you are able to volunteer on Thursdays, please email Nana. It is an easy lunch to help with and gives you an excuse to be at the school. Happy "one less lunch to make"! Sushi Monday and Pizza Wednesday details can be found here. The very popular Fall Noon Hour Program is starting again soon and registration will open on Wednesday, September 20 at 7 pm .
This lunch program offers an opportunity for students to explore an array of courses from arts and crafts to music, dance, sports and clubs. Courses are taught by experienced and paid instructors. The Noon Hour Programs are offered at Tennyson as a not-for-profit program. The fees associated with the classes cover the instructor’s fee and supplies. Classes are open to students in grades 1 - 7 (each class has a particular age requirement) and are offered between 12:25pm and 12:55pm, after students have eaten their lunch. Because, Kindergarteners are busy adjusting to their new schedules, classes are not offered to them … thank you for your understanding. The Noon Hour Program is volunteer run and could use a bit more volunteer support. Please email NoonHourPrograms@lordtennyson.ca if you can be at the school from 12:15 - 12:35 on a particular day to help with getting students to class. Here is the Class Schedule for Fall 2017 Registration opens on Wednesday September 20 at 7 pm. (If it is 7:01 pm and the fundraising button is still not open, refresh your browser. If that didn’t work either? Sign out and sign in again!). Here is our FAQ document Many classes fill quickly so please do not delay in registering! Questions? email NoonHourPrograms@lordtennyson.ca Hello Tennyson parents - Are you already tired of making lunches?
Do you miss the wonderful Munchalunch reminder emails? The first lunches start the week of Sep 25 with Sushi Mondays, Pizza Wednesdays, and C'est Mon Cafe Thursdays all starting that week. C'est Mon Cafe ordering is separate (not through Munchalunch). The first Lunch ordering session of the year is now open! Order by Wed, Sep 20 if you want the first Monday Sushi Lunch. Please note that C'est Mon Cafe Thursday is also an option but the ordering is done directly on their site, not through Munchalunch. Another email will be sent when they are ready for us. I know you want to order lunches immediately (and you should do it very soon) but PLEASE take a moment to chat with your child ... I am starting my 6th year as lunch coordinator and I can promise you that the little angels have loads of opinions about what shows up in front of them. SO. MANY. OPINIONS. Really. Ordering Info Ordering is open now (and will remain open for late orders) but orders must be placed by Wed, Sep 20 in order to receive the first sushi lunch on Monday, Sep 25. Includes Sep 25 (first sushi lunch) - January 31 lunches. Yes, it is a long lunch period but changes/cancellations can be made if needed (with a week's notice) by contacting the lunch administrator. The MunchaLunch link can be found at www.lordtennyson.ca (bottom-left). If you are new to the school, you will need to create an account first. Once you hit "submit my order", your order has been submitted even if you do not pay immediately. If you need to make changes, email hotlunches@lordtennyson.ca. All parents will be asked to update their children's divisions when they first log in. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT - IF THE DIVISION IS NOT CORRECT, WE CAN'T GET THE LUNCH TO THEM! This ordering session covers 17 Pizza Wednesdays and 14 Sushi Mondays ... if you don't gasp at your total, you may have missed some days (see the notes below on Menu 1 & Menu 2 and what it means). Of course, the system allows complete flexibility (order everything, nothing, or any amount in between). Feel free to split your payment into 2 cheques by including one post-dated cheque for half of your total. Munchalunch is now using Stripe instead of PayPal for the credit card payments ... it is supposed to be easier for parents. Be sure to read the Menu 1 & Menu 2 info provided below to avoid hungry children with no lunches! Only pre-ordered lunches will be provided - there will be no "day of" sales. Kindergarten parents (and anyone else) - lunches can be added in late so please feel free to wait and see what your child thinks as the lunches start. They are likely to tell you if they see something they would like to eat. You can add an order anytime but it takes one week for the lunches to start (we order in advance from the suppliers). Changes can also be made to orders (with a weeks notice). Options Pizza Wednesdays Panago pizza will be offered on Wednesdays (cheese or pepperoni slice ... you can order multiple slices). The treat option will be a Plaisir Sucre (Arbutus St) oatmeal chocolate chip cookie. There will be no drinks. We are trying to avoid messes and waste. WATER BOTTLES ARE AWESOME! Sushi Mondays Sushi will continue to be provided by Sushi Aoki (located at Broadway and Cypress). Sushi options include California roll, cucumber roll, half cali / half cucumber roll, avocado roll, tamago roll, wild salmon roll, tuna roll, edamame, and chicken teriyaki. No drinks or treats are on the menu - please send a water bottle for your child. WATER BOTTLES ARE AWESOME! PLEASE READ THE MENU 1 / MENU 2 INFO BELOW - VERY IMPORTANT FOR NEWBIES AND PARENTS WHO LIKE TO ALTERNATE BETWEEN SUSHI AND PIZZA. YOU MUST ORDER FROM BOTH MENU 1 AND MENU 2 IF YOU WANT WEEKLY LUNCHES ... THEY COVER ALTERNATING WEEKS. The lunches are run by parent volunteers and volunteers are needed on all lunch days. It is a great way to connect with students and meet other parents (and see your child at lunch). Is your young student having a tough time adjusting? What a great excuse to come visit them at lunch ... win-win! We will welcome you with open arms (unless that makes you feel uncomfortable, then we will hold off on the bear hugs). The time commitment is 11:30am - 12:30pm on the lunch day and there is no need to commit to every week. Please contact Toni Botham if you would like to volunteer for Monday Sushi Days, Mari Laurenciano for Wednesday Pizza Days, and Nana Yenson for C'est Mon Cafe Thursdays (you can also sign up for Mondays and Wednesdays when you order). Menu 1 & Menu 2: What does it mean? Sushi and Pizza are set up as Menu 1 & Menu 2. They cover alternating weeks (to save time when ordering but still allow flexibility - for example, it is easy to alternate between cheese and pepperoni pizza or only order a cookie every second week). Order from BOTH Menus (1 & 2) if you want lunches every week! If you only order from Pizza Menu 1, your child will get pizza every second week. If you would like to alternate between pizza and sushi (Sushi Monday one week and then Pizza Wednesday the next week), use opposite menus for them ... for example, order from Sushi Menu 1 and Pizza Menu 2. Sushi Menu 1 and Pizza Menu 1 always fall in the same week (I planned around the ProD days unlike last year ... only took me five years to figure that out). Want lunches only once or twice a month? Planning a family vacation? You can easily remove any days at the END of ordering (keep going until the end!). **** If you do not receive a Munchalunch reminder email, your child will not have a lunch provided. **** Please send one! We can only provide what was actually ordered (not what you hoped to or intended to order) … we are good, but not THAT good! You can log in to Munchalunch anytime to check your orders. Use the My Account - View My Orders tab. Your questions will be cheerfully answered … email HotLunches@lordtennyson.ca Proceeds from lunches go towards sending next year's Gr 7 students to Quebec, the Quebec Futures Fund, and PAC. Thank you so much for the support! The first PAC (Parent) meeting of the year will be held on Monday, September 18 at 7pm. All parents are welcome and childcare will be provided.
If you’re interested in the seismic upgrade/new school project, you should come to this meeting. In addition to the usual exciting PAC agenda, City of Vancouver development review and urban development staff will present the status of the development application for our new school. In preparation for the PAC meeting, you can read all about the development application on the City’s website. Please note that the deadline for comments on the development application has been extended to September 22. What: First PAC Meeting of the year and New School Development Application Presentation When: Monday, September 18 at 7 pm Where: Lord Tennyson Elementary School Library Childcare provided. Thank you to Tennyson parent Lisa for registering Tennyson in the Cobs Bread Dough Raiser.

Cross Country Running Team practices for K to Grade 7 will take place Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 8 am sharp, rain or shine starting Wednesday, September 13 at 8 am. We meet at the front stairs of the school. Students will have the opportunity to run at district mini-meets at other local schools and parks. The cross country season runs until mid-October. All grades are welcome (YES - we want Kindergarteners!). Grade 2s and under must have a parent with them at the morning practices. Tennyson's Cross Country Running team is organized and coordinated by Tennyson parent volunteer, Chris Fuoco. Show your support for our Tigers by joining in the practices and cheering on our Tigers at mini-meets. If you are able to take on other duties such as bringing snacks, driving students to mini-meets, coordinating t-shirt orders or other duties, please contact crosscountry@lordtennyson.ca. |
