Traffic and parking around the school

10/11/2019

As the construction continues, we are asking families to please make arrangements to park away from the school building and to avoid the intersections of 11th at Maple and 10th at Maple. Between the trucks and the traffic pattern change along the 10th Avenue bike corridor, it is best to avoid these areas if at all possible. The City has said that they will be sending out more information about the 10th Avenue plan and streets upgrades (such as painting of crosswalks and installation of bollards) in the near future. There is now a pedestrian light at 12th and Maple. Also, the contractor of the new site has said that they are doing their best to avoid truck traffic at peak pick up and drop off times, but the nature of their schedules and timelines do not always allow for this.

The City has told us that they have ordered increased bylaw enforcement around the school and in the general area due to calls from our neighbours, and calls regarding the bike corridor. Please refrain from parking in Permit Only spots as this creates tensions with our neighbours. Also, please be vigilant of City signage. We know that it is challenging to maneuver around certain areas around the school, and we strongly recommend families make arrangements to walk in (not at the affected intersections) from south of 12thAve or other areas a few blocks from the school. We thank all of our families for your patience during the construction and City traffic changes.

For seasoned Howlers, we'll try to be brief...for new to Tennyson families, check out the Howl page  to see what the fuss is about! Also, check your child's bag for an orange notice that is being sent home today.

Let's make this year's Howl the best one yet!

Today: Sign up for a volunteer spot (links to spreadsheets are below). Better yet, sign up your spouse or friend! Won't that be a spooky surprise!
This weekend: Get your costumes ready & start planning your pumpkin carving.
Thursday the 17th: Help out with set-up anytime from 3-9pm. Thursday afternoon and evening set-up sign-up sheet. Come for the entire time or come for an hour, all hands are appreciated. Child minding included, but wine is not, sorry.
Friday the 18th
: Help needed before the event to finish setting up classrooms from 3-6pm. Friday afternoon set-up sign-up sheet
Friday night HOWL: Bring your family and enjoy the event! Sign up for a shift to help the event run smoothly...and your kids love to see you in charge! If you don't know what to sign up for maybe pick  Friday Night - Howl Night sign-up sheet
Saturday: Clean up! Bring your kids, it's a family affair. (Coffee & snacks included) Saturday break down and clean up sign-up sheet

Extra! Extra! (...help is needed...)
We need a few bossy vampires to do some prep work for the event - Contest Coordinator, Jello Eating, Cake Walk (Cake Walk cake sign-up sheet), Scary Soccer & Room Guarantor. Please sign up as a Room Head on the spreadsheet or email  howlcoordinators@lordtennyson.ca if you want more info! (Don't be scared by the empty spaces on the spreadsheet...you will not be alone...we have a large group of high school students also volunteering, but need scary parents to run the show!)

Avoid the line-up Howl night by buying your tickets pre-sale!
Howl tickets will be on sale next week, Tuesday - Friday, before and after school.   Seller will be at the covered area where kindergarten kids are dropped off in the morning, from 8.45-9.15 am, and at the front school steps (or just inside the doors main doors if it's raining) in the afternoon, from 3-3.15 pm.  Entrance tickets are $5 and game cards are $5 – preschoolers and parents volunteering on the night of the howl (6-9.30pm) get in free.

Share your thoughts about the changes on the 10th Avenue

10/3/2019

Are you frustrated by the changes to the 10th Avenue bikeway? The city is collecting feedback NOW before they review how the initial changes have gone.

Please, PLEASE email 10thavenue@vancouver.ca as soon as you can if you can help amplify the concerns with the stretch surrounding Tennyson.

Here is a sample wording:

Dear 10th Avenue Bikeway Committee,

As a member of the Tennyson community bordering West 10th Avenue between Maple and Cypress, I am writing to express my concerns with the changes to the 10th Avenue bikeway.

The removal of the 4-way stop at the intersection of Maple and 10th puts the hundreds of children who cross that intersection daily at risk.  At the very least, a pedestrian crosswalk with a button and flashing lights would help increase safety of children walking to and from school.

Also, the changes to the one way sections need increased signage for motorists who do not understand or choose to ignore the new traffic pattern.  And, while we are appreciative of the separated bike lanes, the road markings are not clear and consistent throughout between Maple and Vine.

We care deeply about our children and community, and hope you can quickly make revisions to help keep these kids safe.

Best,
