Successful Winter Clothing Drive

11/9/2015

Thank you to Nadine and Dreama for organizing this year's Winter Clothing Drive.
The clothes went to  Britannia   Elementary School, Lord Strathcona  Elementary   School and to St. Elizabeth House (aka Spring House) which is a shelter for women with families. They were all very appreciative.
Tennyson's  generosity   shines once again!

Halloween candy donated!

11/9/2015

Thank you to everyone who generously donated their family’s unwanted and excess Halloween candy and treats.

Through a Tennyson parent, the Zero Waste Committee was able to identify a most worthy non-profit to donate the two large boxes of candy we collected (photos below).

Quest Food Exchange is a not-for-profit organization that offers accessibility to a variety of affordable and healthy foods for low income and marginalized individuals.  Serving the communities of East Vancouver, Burnaby and Surrey, Quest operates four not for profit grocery markets, offering a full range of food and other products for a fraction of the retail cost. In collaboration with food suppliers who donate their surplus food, and over 500 social service agency partners who refer their clients, Quest’s social enterprise model is predominantly a food redistribution hub.

Quest Food Exchanges’s mandate is to   Reduce hunger with dignity, Build Community and Foster Sustainability.

Quest assists individuals each month through partnerships with local social service agencies by providing their clients with access to their not-for-profit grocery markets and by delivering raw food materials to agencies for their own meal programs. In this manner, those helping Quest are also helping hundreds of other agencies and their clients.

Quest’s mandates are in line with the goals of the Zero Waste committee and we are thrilled that they were able to put our unwanted candy to good use.

While delivering the candy we got a glimpse at their storefront and warehouse where they employ developmentally disabled individuals.  We were told that they will take our candy and re-bag it into small treat bags for sale in the store.

We are happy to see that all the candy didn’t end up in the landfill and to help with a great cause.  (Yes, during the drive we had several families tell us that they usually just dump the extra candy in the trash but were happy to see it going to good use).

Thanks to all the efforts, we plan to organize this event again next year.

Another full round of Reading Buddies  at Kitsilano Branch begins January 22nd  running through to March 4

Babysitting/ At Home Alone/ Social Netiquette after school class

11/9/2015

An exciting new program is coming to Tennyson Elementary:

Babysitting/At Home Alone/ Social Netiquette is open to students in grades 4-7.  Beginning November 17, and running until December 15, this new after school program will train students in the business of babysitting, emergency first aid, and caring for kids of all ages.  Participants will earn their babysitting certificate at the end of the program.  In the At home Alone component, students will learn about personal safety, and how to cope with being at home by themselves.  In the final component, Social Netiquette, kids will explore personal and internet safety, and learn about how to think critically while online.

The program will run from 3:05-5pm on Tuesdays.  The cost for all 4 classes is $100.  Registration forms will be available outside the school office and cheques and completed forms can be placed in the drop box by Friday, Nov 13.

This program is brought to you by the West 2 Community Schools Team in partnership with Pacific First Aid.  Any questions can be directed to Dianne Sankey, West 2 Community Schools Team Programmer at [email protected] or 604 713-5825.

We Scare Hunger

11/3/2015

Thank you to Tennyson's Global Group and especially to the We Scare Hunger leaders (Gr 7 students Tayte and Sophie) for organizing this year's We Scare Hunger Campaign. You have until this Friday to bring in food items (for the Vancouver Food Bank). It was obvious on Monday morning that many of the Gr 6  & 7 students Trick or Treated for food for the Food Bank on Halloween! Congratulations on making a difference!
