Thank you to Nadine and Dreama for organizing this year's Winter Clothing Drive. The clothes went to Britannia Elementary School, Lord Strathcona Elementary School and to St. Elizabeth House (aka Spring House) which is a shelter for women with families. They were all very appreciative. Tennyson's generosity shines once again! Thank you to everyone who generously donated their family’s unwanted and excess Halloween candy and treats. Through a Tennyson parent, the Zero Waste Committee was able to identify a most worthy non-profit to donate the two large boxes of candy we collected (photos below). Quest Food Exchange is a not-for-profit organization that offers accessibility to a variety of affordable and healthy foods for low income and marginalized individuals. Serving the communities of East Vancouver, Burnaby and Surrey, Quest operates four not for profit grocery markets, offering a full range of food and other products for a fraction of the retail cost. In collaboration with food suppliers who donate their surplus food, and over 500 social service agency partners who refer their clients, Quest’s social enterprise model is predominantly a food redistribution hub. Quest Food Exchanges’s mandate is to Reduce hunger with dignity, Build Community and Foster Sustainability. Quest assists individuals each month through partnerships with local social service agencies by providing their clients with access to their not-for-profit grocery markets and by delivering raw food materials to agencies for their own meal programs. In this manner, those helping Quest are also helping hundreds of other agencies and their clients. To learn more visit: http://www.questoutreach.org/ Quest’s mandates are in line with the goals of the Zero Waste committee and we are thrilled that they were able to put our unwanted candy to good use. While delivering the candy we got a glimpse at their storefront and warehouse where they employ developmentally disabled individuals. We were told that they will take our candy and re-bag it into small treat bags for sale in the store. We are happy to see that all the candy didn’t end up in the landfill and to help with a great cause. (Yes, during the drive we had several families tell us that they usually just dump the extra candy in the trash but were happy to see it going to good use). Thanks to all the efforts, we plan to organize this event again next year. Tennyson students, grades 2 - 4, who would benefit from reading with a buddy, or French immersion students who need more time reading in English, should consider the Reading Buddies program at the Kitsilano Branch of the Vancouver Public Library.
This free program provides teen volunteers to do 1:1 reading with younger students. The program runs from 4pm to 5pm on Fridays. The library has a few spaces available in their currently running fall program ending December 4. Another full round of Reading Buddies at Kitsilano Branch begins January 22nd running through to March 4th. Call the Kitsilano Branch at 604-665-3976 for more information. The cost for all 4 classes is $100. Registration forms will be available outside the school office and cheques and completed forms can be placed in the drop box by Friday, Nov 13.
