Thanks to Lori for sending along this article from Active for Life:
With spring in our minds, kids are starting the switch between winter and summer sports … or are they? Are we seeing more and more kids playing the same sport year-round because they’ve been told they have talent? Check out this article from Active for Life as the author discusses the difference between talent development and talent identification. Sleep Away French Camp for the Whole Family
Are you looking for a getaway and a way to support your child's French Immersion experience? Consider going to BC Family French Camp. French is OPTIONAL [for adults]! The kids speak French during program times. The camps run for two weeks in July and August in each of three locations: Salmon Arm, Nanaimo and one week in Gwillam Lake. Day camp programs run Sunday to Tuesday and Wednesday to Friday from 9:30 to 4:00 with a break at lunch. The kids are kept busy with games, crafts, water sports, hikes, songs and performances. The incredibly energetic counsellors are mostly university students from Québec with some high school junior counsellors. Tennyson families have been in past years and would be happy to share their experiences. Checkout the slideshow from last summer: http://www.bcffc.com/slideshow.html http://www.bcffc.com/ The Vancouver School Board issued it's 2016/17 preliminary budget plan on March 31. Due to an estimated $27M shortfall, many significant cuts are proposed. Over 200 positions are on the chopping block and many students will be affected.
Some cuts that might get you fired up ... the entire elementary Strings Program, cuts in Arts & Athletics funding, some Special Needs consultants and teacher mentors, huge cuts to the Gifted Programs (including challenge centre teachers, the gifted mentor, and a psychologist). The proposed budget can be found here. What can you do?
Thanks for the support! A "not so fun" fact: The average BC annual funding per student is $12,133 whereas the Canadian average is $12,377. This difference would be about $17M annually in the Vancouver School Board alone (getting close to the $27M shortfall!).
