Workout for Women's Day is a coming together of local movement studios and instructors around International Women's Day to offer by-donation fitness classes for charities that support girls, women, and other marginalized genders. This campaign, which is co-founded by a Tennyson mom, has raised more than $145,000 in 5 years since it began in 2019! Workout for Women's Day 2024 will feature 45 in studio and virtual classes throughout the Lower Mainland. Most classes are for adults (not just women!), but there are a couple classes for kids, and one for teens as well! All classes are by-donation, and will support 3 incredible local charities: Please check out the schedule HERE, sign up for classes, donate if you can, and share with your network! This guide for parents outlines how we can work together to ensure our children are part of a safe and respectful school community. We can achieve this by:
• helping our children recognize when they are experiencing or participating in bullying, • taking steps to end bullying by working with staff at schools and representatives of community-based organizations and • improving our school’s culture so that every student feels a sense of security, belonging and well-being. Read the guide, here. The ministry, in partnership with adolescent Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Hayley Watson - Open Parachute, is hosting free virtual sessions on youth substance use for parents/guardians, caregivers and caring adults. Dr. Watson will provide valuable insights, practical tips, and resources to equip participants with the tools needed to guide their children and youth toward making positive choices when it comes to substance use.
Key Takeaways for Participants: • Learn why children/teenagers are drawn to substances. • Understand what causes and maintains substance use disorder and needs. • Increase your child’s ability to make positive choices about substances. • Acquire practical conversation tools for discussing substances in the home. Participants must register in advance due to limited capacity. Sessions dates are: • February 28, 6:00 – 7:30 pm PST - Click here to Register DO YOU LOVE TO SWIM? The early origins of the word Blue meant shimmering and lustrous. Now whether cobalt, azure, ultramarine, grey, periwinkle or any other shade, the colour blue represents Nature's images of water, sea and sky, while evoking a feeling of tranquility, solace, imagination and trust. Our organization provides opportunities primarily for girls and young women in the City of Vancouver, however, we are inclusive of all gender identifications.
We believe increasing youth participation in softball is extremely important for girls and young women, as it will enhance their physical, mental, emotional, and cognitive development. More specifically, VMSA believes that providing access to softball provides young female athletes opportunities to develop: softball skills (across multiple areas); confidence; leadership; decision making; friendship and camaraderie; and other life skills. You can read more about the VMSA and our vision and philosophies at http://vmsa.ca/page.php?page_id=94702. Our league runs from April to June and we have opened registration for the 2024 season. We have more than five (5) past registrants from your school, however, we would love to build upon that and grow that representation in our Association - we would love to further promote softball and the benefits of playing sport in your school community. Financial assistance is available for families that need it, we want to remove all barriers to playing our sport. We have also scheduled six clinics, free of charge, to anyone that wants to come out to try softball. These clinics will take place over three Saturdays in February and March. We are planning the first one to be indoors, while we are hopeful we will be able to run the March clinics outdoors (we will have an indoor option as a backup). Details on these clinics are located here: https://go.teamsnap.com/forms/417574/signups/new Pedalheads Bike is a learn-to-ride camp known for taking kids from training wheels to two wheel to road riding. We combine a fun group setting with specialized equipment, tailored cycling lessons, and incredible instructors to build confidence and get some of the most tentative kids biking on their own.
