Filling up buckets of kindness at Tennyson

3/29/2019

This post, written by Vice Principal  Regina  Vosahlo, was originally posted  on the VSB's Lord Tennyson Elementary School web page. Check it regularly for school news.

On Wednesday, March 14th, 2019, our students spent the afternoon learning together in multi-age groupings, called the Tennyson Circles. Grade 6 and 7 student leaders showed excellent leadership in presenting a lesson on kindness, empathy and gratitude in our school community. The lesson drew on the previous reading of the book, Have You Filled a Bucked Today? The students presented on the importance of showing kindness to others and then led their classmates in skits about how to be kind in various in and out of class situations. They then had everyone illustrate a bucket with a an act of kindness described in it. It was a wonderful afternoon of continuing to work with and learn with teachers and students from different classes at Tennyson. Great work, everyone!

Registration for Orienteering Adventure Kids (OAK)  program this Spring now open

3/14/2019

Orienteering BC, together with the Greater Vancouver Orienteering Club (GVOC), will again be offering our very successful Orienteering Adventure Kids (OAK)  program this Spring, for kids ages 7-14.  The eight weekly sessions run on Tuesday evenings, from April 2 to May 21. Program capacity is kept low, to enable individual attention, and the Spring 2019 group is expected to be ~10 participants. OAK sessions (6:30 – 8:00pm) run at different parks around the city, such as Memorial Park South, Jericho Park and Vanier Park. Note that OAK sessions will always go, rain or shine (because that’s what orienteers do!)

The OAK coaches and assistants follow a tested skills progression that systematically teaches kids how to read a map and navigate safely through unfamiliar terrain. The program focus is on learning new skills, improving physical and spatial literacy and, most importantly, having fun outdoors! More details, and the registration portal for the Spring OAK program, can be found at  http://oak.orienteeringvancouver.ca/

If you would like more information about the program, please contact Adam Woods, Head Coach (skiwoodsski@gmail.com) or Brian Ellis, Program Manager (bee@msl.ubc.ca).

Gordon PAC and PIE have extended an invitation to Tennyson Parents to attend a presentation:

Looking into the Future: Building Resilience Against Anxiety with Dr. Bethany Michel

When: March 7th, 6:30-8:30 pm
