PAC Executive update and positions still to be filled

6/15/2020

At the PAC meeting on Monday night, our new executive was elected for the upcoming school year. We are pleased to announce the following:

PAC Chair: Tai Scott
PAC Co-Chair: Katherine Smith
Treasurer: Brenna Fraser
Kindergarten Representative: Carmen Leach
Primary Representative: Leora Fenner
Kits High Liaison: Jacqueline Crummey
Website: Salma Jamal

Thank you to our new executive, as well as those who are staying in their roles, for stepping up to volunteer!

We also want to thank the PAC members who are stepping back this year.  Thank you to outgoing PAC Chair Jo Grabinsky,  outgoing Treasurers Nasser Esfahani and Jennifer  Elliott and outgoing Past Chair Tam Cummings. Jo, Nasser, Jennifer and Tam are leaving  their roles because their terms are up, but they have promised they will be in hand to advise and support the new PAC Executives next year. Thank you!

Three key positions to be filled at the moment are:

Co-Treasurer: With the introduction of School Cash Online, this role has become a lot less onerous. Working with Brenna you will help manage the PAC Finances. This includes managing the books, signing cheques and a few bank runs.

DPAC Rep:
The Tennyson PAC works with the Vancouver District PAC  to support education for all children of Vancouver. The role can be as big or as small as you like and you can start small and get more involved later if you like. The DPAC representative:
  • Acts as a liaison between the PAC and DPAC by attending DPAC meetings
  • Communicates and obtains information to and from PAC
  • Brings forward issues that may be common to more than one school
Here are some links to tell you more about the DPAC and the Vancouver DPAC
https://bccpac.bc.ca/index.php/members/pac-dpac/what-is-a-dpac and http://vancouverdpac.org/

Intermediate Rep:
Some new, non-elected positions have been created this year for PAC to get more voices at the table. As the Intermediate Representative, you will speak for parents and students in the intermediate grades and make sure their opinions and needs are considered.

If you’re interested in these roles, sharing any of the other positions that are currently filled, or volunteering as lead for any of the committees, (available positions)  please get in touch. No previous experience necessary. To volunteer for any of the open positions on the PAC committee, please contact  [email protected].

PAC AGM - Monday, June 15th 7:05pm

6/15/2020

The PAC AGM is Monday, June 15th, and we'd love to see you there (via Teams). We will finalize our budget as well as vote in new PAC Executive members for the upcoming school year. Tennyson offers a multitude of enrichment opportunities to enhance our children's learning, development and school experience from hot lunches to school technology. This magic only happens because of parent volunteers: an hour a year or an hour a day. If you have time to give, we have an opening for you. No experience necessary.

When:  Monday June 15th, 7:05pm (to give time for the appreciation salute to Essential Services workers)

Where: Your sitting room
(The meeting will be hosted on Microsoft Teams. Please click on the link that will be emailed out on Monday and join through your child's account.)

6/13/2020

Please join me in congratulating Mme Leong who has recently announced her retirement.

DPAC Town Hall

6/9/2020

Picture
DPAC has been holding more meetings than normal recently due to the increased need for open lines of communication between parents and the district.  We want to thank you for your interest in your child's education and ask with you to bear with us a little bit longer as the year draws to a close.  There are a number of meetings remaining this month.
Tuesday June 9th 7PM - VSB Budget 2020/21 townhall meeting reminderThis year’s budget process has been delayed by COVID, but the work is continuing.  We will have VSB staff answering budget questions at an online townhall this Tuesday, June 9th.  Trustees will also be invited to attend to hear parent concerns.

We have created a survey so you can provide your questions to be answered and we have also included some survey questions from the VSB regarding your priorities.  With so many uncertainties this year, it is important to know your priorities in case costs are higher than anticipated.

Please submit questions using this form by Monday morning here - we’ve included the draft budget and some other Q&A for your reference.

You can register to attend the townhall here.  This meeting is open to all VSB parents.

Thursday, June 11, 7PM – DPAC Executive Meeting - Online, register here

Thursday June 18 7PM - DPAC AGM

Hot lunch update

6/6/2020

I want to open this post with a huge thank you to Barabara Arenson who has been diligently cancelling hot lunches to make sure no-one is out of pocket. We really appreciate everything you do for the Tennyson community.

The message below is from Barbara.

A couple of months have passed since I last emailed you. Although there is actually not more certainty, it is certain, that we’re are getting used to things, and then they are getting changed up, again. I had to say good bye to my weekly ritual, cancelling the hot lunches and canceled all the remaining lunches. That is done, now. There are no more hot lunches for this school year.

  • If you are logging into your MunchLunch account, you will see how much your credit is. If you do nothing, this credit will still be there in September and can be applied to future hot lunches and noon hour programs.
  • If you need the money, or are leaving the school and have no one left who could use up this money, please email [email protected] and I will let the treasurers know to e-transfer the money to you. As usual, we are all volunteers, so please be patient with us. We are doing our best.

AutismBC Talk: "Social Emotional Learning for Youth on the Spectrum"

6/5/2020

AutismBC proudly presents:

“Social Emotional Learning for Youth with ASD at Extraordinary Times”
by Bohdanna Popowycz, M.Ed., BCBA

Date: Friday June 19, 2020
Time: 10-11:30AM
Place: Zoom and Facebook Live

During these uncertain times, and with school coming to a close, how does a parent take the summer and continue to work on social emotional learning, and soft skill ‘teaching’?  Let’s be creative and discuss what can be done at home with both leisure skills and growth in independence skills for teens with autism.  We will talk about some ideas, how to break this down into teaching components and discuss how this can ‘hit’ some of the important soft skills as well as the mechanics (hard skills) needed to be successful in high school and beyond!

Speaker:  Bohdanna Popowycz M.Ed., BCBA

Bohdanna has been involved with individuals on the autism spectrum from toddlers to adults since the early 90’s.  Her background and education, specifically in autism, started in the States under the supervision, guidance and training at a Lovaas Replication Site. This allowed Bohdanna the honour and privilege to move to different countries and learn from various professionals in the field.  She and her family moved to British Columbia in 2001 where she began building relationships with schools in the Lower Mainland.  She, along with parent advocates started Harmony House CARES, and currently works closely with school districts across the Lower Mainland (e.g. life and practical skills coordinator/consultant with a local school) and in the States.  One of her current passions is working together with families and all stakeholders to build solid IEPs and plans, in which functional and useful transitions can be made for the betterment of a youth’s life as they learn and grow towards adulthood. Bohdanna is the proud mother of 3 amazing kids.

Mark your calendar.  Log on to Facebook page “Autism BC” at 10AM Friday June 19th to participate in this Facebook Live workshop.  Send your request for Zoom link to [email protected] if you do not have Facebook account.
