Run for the Kids - Tennyson Team

6/6/2016

We had almost fifty Tennyson students and parents run yesterday in the Run for the Kids run.   The Tenny Tigers Team  raised  $1400  for  Children's Hospital and  survived the heat!  Tracy and Mari interrupted their run to lead a water station that didn't have enough volunteers! Way to show Tiger spirit, Tennyson parent style!

Silent Orchestra rally - Tuesday, June 7 at 4pm

6/6/2016

Join the  Coalition for Music Education in British Columbia  and students from across the district to protest against the proposed cuts to elementary band and strings for the 2016-2017.

"The importance of music education is far-reaching and well documented in research and education curricula worldwide. Yet, its core purpose is quite simple: music education is essential to learning, development, and to being human. I invite you to join us and to support the work of the Coalition for Music Education in BC as we advocate for quality music education, taught by skilled professionals, across our province."
- Christin R. Maclellan
President, Coalition for Music Education in British Columbia

- 4 p.m.: meet at W. 10 x Fir (VSB  offices)
- Bring any instrument (you do not need to play it)
- Bring a music stand (if possible)
- Become a silent orchestra: we stand together for the thousands of silenced elementary students who, should the status quo persist, will be deprived of artistic opportunities in 2016-2017

2nd Annual Bike to School Week - what a success!

6/4/2016

Wow, what a great Bike to School Week!  It was great to see all the bike racks and fences full of bikes at Lord Tennyson Elementary School. Our community has much to be proud of and many to thank for such a great event. First let’s start with the results.

We had a total of 614 bikers for the week!

113 on Monday
124 on Tuesday
125 on Wednesday
110 on Thursday
142 on Friday

Each day either the class of Division 8 (Mme Leong, Gr 3) or Division 14 (Mme Lichimo, Gr 1) had the most riders. One day both divisions had 16 riders per class!

The week was a filled with lots of activities including our parent coffee and biker breakfast on Monday graciously donated by Starbucks, Greens Organic + Natural Market, and PAC. Penny Noble, School Board Trustee and Bike to Work BC Representative visited the school on Monday. An afternoon assembly on bike safety was given to the primary grades by the VPD.

The fun continued on Wednesday afternoon with a bike and helmet decorating stations. With healthy snacks provided by Green’s Organic + Natural Market again, and HUB.

Our community support continued with student bike tune-ups donated by Ride-On Again Bikes on Thursday. There were many thankful and excited students at pick-up on Thursday. In the afternoon, Mme Leong's class set up a course with cones and hola hoops to ride around. Everyone in the class enjoyed riding their bikes during school hours.

On Friday we completed the week with a big celebration bikers' breakfast.  Fresh fruit, butter croissants, muffins, bagels, fresh squeezed juice and coffee were all generously donated by Loblaws City Market newly located in our community (Arbutus and 16th Ave). The best part was that Loblaw’s served up everything so that everyone at Tennyson could enjoy themselves.

During biker sign in on Friday the bells were ringing! Biker bells were graciously donated by Pedalheads.

Friday afternoon Ride-On Again Bikes was again at the school doing student bike tune-ups. They were all finished at 3 o'clock however they stayed later to tune-up several extra student bikes plus a couple of parents had their bikes tuned-up as well.

Please be sure to thank all these businesses the next time you visit their establishments.

All of this could not have been completed without the help of our many parent and student volunteers including:

Parents:                                                                                      Students:
Amber Ridington                                                    Sebastian Ridington
Tai Scott                                                                                   Mia Rafii
Dreama Lee                                                                       Stella Lee
Donalyn Simpson                                                 Sebastian Lee
Nana Yenson                                                                   Abby Yenson
Jackie Corlett                                                                 Emily Corlett
Karen Davies                                                                   Annabel Corlett
Michelle Porter
Barbara Arenson

We had Grade 6 and 7 students help spread the word about Bike to School week with their talented poster drawing skills and helped thank our community supporters with lovely thank you cards.

Overall it was a great success at Lord Tennyson for our second year participating in Bike to School Week.

Tennyson student cutting hair for Cancer Kids

6/3/2016

Hi!
My name is Ishani Khengar and I'm seven years old. I'm raising funds for BC Children's Hospital for Cancer Kids by cutting my hair that I've been growing for six years, to make wigs for kids who have suffered hair loss during treatment. My first haircut in six years will be on June 17th!
Any donation will make a huge difference in these kids' lives.
Below is a brief note as to what the organisation does.
Thank you for your support!
