Currently, Mountain West Studios is Lord Tennyson's school photographer.  There has been some interest expressed in exploring other photography studio options for both individual and class photos.

Accordingly, set up in the school’s front lobby is a table with photography portfolio examples from three different studios for parents to view and consider. Each of these three companies is approved by the Vancouver School Board. The three studios are:   [Click on the studio name to link to their website]
1.     Mountain West Studios
You are likely familiar with Mountain West Studios as it has been engaged as our school’s photographer for several years including the current 2013-14 school year.  Mountain West uses green screen technology to provide a variety of background options which may be selected once parents receive the photo proof.  There are a variety of portrait packages to choose from ($22-$43) and single sheets ($14-$16), as well as digital enhancements (e.g., basic retouching for $7) and various photo gift products (e.g., calendars, magnets, holiday cards, etc. – prices vary).  Online ordering is available.  Mountain West’s website and portfolio includes more detailed information.

2.     Life Touch
This large photography company primarily handles photo ordering online through a secure website.  Life Touch uses is its own patented technology, which is very different from the green screen technology employed by Mountain West.  There are a variety of portrait packages to choose from ($24-$47) and “add-ons” ($6 - $25; e.g., 4 wallet size photo add-on is $6) as well as a wide variety of photo gift products (e.g., mugs, mouse pads, phone cases, etc. – prices vary).  Parents can also choose the preferred background and pose before picture day.  Life Touch’s website and portfolio includes more detailed information.

3.     Darby Photos
Darby Photos is primarily a sports photography company that is owner operated and local to Richmond. Darby Photos uses traditional predetermined screens (i.e., two backdrops would be approved by PAC in advance of photo day).  There are a variety of portrait packages to choose from ($26-$39) and single sheets ($13-$25) as well as a various photo gift products (e.g., magnets, book marks, photo key chains, etc. – prices vary).  Colour correction and retouching services are free of charge.  Darby Photos’ website and portfolio includes more detailed information.
All three of these studios offers the following:
  • Family discount:  Families with 3 children at Tennyson receive third child’s package free
  • Complimentary class group photo
  • Emergency cards
  • Family photo night fundraising opportunities
  • Compensation package to Tennyson
  • CD of student images for school administrative programme
  • Complimentary staff packages
  • Various photo product options (e.g., calendars, magnets, holiday cards, etc.)

Results will be shared at next week’s PAC meeting (Tuesday, December 3 at 7 PM in the library) at which time the selection of the 2014-15 school photography studio will be determined based on vote results.

If you have any specific questions about one or more of these companies, contact information is included in the portfolios in the school lobby and at the website links above.  You may also contact parent champion, Christine Bowden at bowden.christine@gmail.com

I like the owner and locally operated aspect....and it's simple that there are only 2 backgrounds approved by pac.

Another couple of points to mention about Darby Photos is that each student is photographed by two different photographers, so that you truly get two different poses. The standard process is to take two pictures of each student using the same photographer, which means that there isn't much difference between the two takes. Darby Photos can also take sibling photos for those of us with multiple children at Lord Tennyson. Basically, as an owner operated business that is customer service driven Darby Photos can customize our school package to meet our needs.

I have been very disappointed with Mountain West - their photos look like mug shots, they don't reply to emails or voicemails, and last year they sent me a blurry print :(

I like that you can get more than one pose in your order. These pictures seem less old-fashioned somehow.
