Vancouver DPAC is proud to present an in-person parent education event. On May 7, we will have The Other People present to our community at the Prince of Wales Secondary School Auditorium at 6:45pm. This is an opportunity to hear from a local group that represents the great diversity within our district. It will help us learn how bias and discrimination function and impact those affected by it, with the goal of fostering greater understanding and acceptance for everyone. We hope that you will join us for this important and informative event.
Link to Facebook event page. What: An in-person presentation from "The Other People" for the VSB Community. A free event with childcare provided for school-aged children. When: Tuesday, May 7, 2024, doors open at 6:30 PM presentation starts at 6:45 PM, Where: Prince of Wales Secondary Auditorium, 2250 Eddington Drive, Vancouver At the April 15th General PAC meeting, there was a vote in support of sending the attached letter to the VSB Education Trustees regarding staffing conditions and more specifically the lack of support for learners with disabilities.
Unions representing teachers, SSAs, and other staff expressed their concerns about the dire situation in Vancouver schools in an open letter on February 2, 2024. Then, on February 6, 2024 the DPAC Inclusive Education Working Group (IEWG) released a letter reiterating this concern, particularly as it impacts disabled learners. (See links to these letters below.) We are adding our voices to the many schools who have already sent similar letters in an effort to bring attention to this ongoing issue. A letter from the Tennyson PAC (below) has already been sent. You are welcome to use the same letter, adapt it, or write your own letter to show your support. You can find the template here For more information: Tennyson PAC letter Joint letter/press release from VSB teacher and staff unions DPAC IEWG letter Media Thank you for all that you do to support our students! We are super excited to put out a team for the BC Children's Hospital Fun Run on June 9 at 9am (best to arrive at 8.15ish). You can sign up for the 5k or 2K run and can choose whether you want to pay for the event or fundraise. As well as the races there is a post-race festival which is a lot of fun. Sign up for the Tennyson Tigers team here. Please note this is a family event, children need to be accompanied by adults as the venue is incredibly busy. Email us at pac@lordtennyson.ca if you have any questions. We hope you can join us for this fun community event. Before Covid, one of Tennyson’s major traditions was the Grade 7 Quebec trip. Since 2019, the trip has not happened and it's unclear if there will be a trip in the next few years.
Part of the framework of the Grade 7 Quebec trip was a pot of money, theTennyson Quebec Futures Fund (TQFF). The TQFF is used to provide bursaries for students who needed it for a grade 7 Quebec trip, or to make up a shortfall of funding for a trip if the school didn't receive the expected government grants. The fund currently holds approx. $87,000, and the last deposit to the TQFF was in 2017. The TQFF Committee has been working hard all year, debating options for spending the TQFF money so it benefits the majority of the school community. After long deliberations the committee determined that, at this time, there are no special projects or activities that would merit spending all the money in the TQFF fund in one go. VSB rules state that money must be fundraised for a specific purpose. Since the TQFF money was specifically fundraised as an emergency fund to pay for Quebec trips when they don't receive the government grants, or for bursaries, the Tennyson community cannot spend the money on anything else unless we vote to give it a new purpose. So, the TQFF is asking parents to vote on whether you want to keep the money in the TQFF to cover bursaries or make up for a shortfall of funding for a Quebec trip in the future, or if you want to release the money to be used for other PAC initiatives. Between April 15 and April 28, 2024 parents will have an opportunity to vote on how they would like to move forward with the TQFF. The TQFF committee is also asking parents to complete a brief, four-question, survey following your vote, that will help us better understand parent preferences. As parent voice and engagement are vital to a thriving community, we hope you can take some time to answer these important questions. Vote and complete the survey here! - you can make one vote per child that you have at Tennyson Funderland Summer Camp registration is now open.

We offer a free 10-week after-school program that provides mentoring from high-school girls to groups of students who identify as girls and non-binary with the goal of increasing confidence in math (or at an equivalent level). Our program is aimed at 3rd graders, but 2nd and 4th graders can still participate. By using fun games, art, music and physical activity to teach skip counting and multiplication techniques, we bring a unique approach to learning math. Please visit our website for more information:https://www.girlstothepowerofmath.org/. We ask that you note that 3rd graders will be given priority if we receive too many registrations. GOAL: To bridge the gender gap in STEM. The program was developed from research that Loran Fellow Alexa Bailey, founder of Girls to the Power of Math, conducted with UBC professor Dr. Toni Schmader. The research showed that math confidence in BC elementary schools declines disproportionately among girls, not boys. In keeping with the current view of education, Girls to the Power of Math aims to provide the mentoring needed to maintain women's excellence in STEM fields. Statistics Canada found that "among high school graduates, women are 29.8% less likely than men to enroll in a post-secondary STEM program shortly after graduation" (Ching et al., 2021). Our hope is to encourage a love of math early in girls' lives that will continue into adulthood. Sessions run from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM on Thursdays, starting on April 18th. To register your child, please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/f1uTCzy6xZD9E1mD8 or scan the QR code on the poster enclosed below. Parent Vaping Workshop – April 23
SACY is hosting a parent/caregiver evening workshop on vaping on Tuesday, April 23, 7:00 - 8:30 PM at Killarney Secondary School. Ocean Ambassadors Canada, a local ocean stewardship charity, is offering summer camps at Jericho Beach this summer. The camps combine stand-up paddling, exploring life in the intertidal zone, hands-on ocean health experiments, making reusable items to take home, and lots of play on the beach and in the ocean. Our mission is to connect young people with the ocean, educate them about marine pollution and ocean health, and inspire them to take meaningful action – to become Ocean Ambassadors. We know that, as Jacques Cousteau said, “People protect what they love.” Swim lessons in Vancouver are notoriously hard to get into and this swim club starts kids with no swimming experience in their “green” level in shallow end of pool. Many Tennyson kids swim with the Pacific Swim Academy (PSA).
PSA is now accepting registrations for their Green and Blue levels. Kids do not need to have prior swimming lessons or experience. They need to be grade 3/going into Grade 3, coachable and able to receive instruction in a group setting. Join other Tennyson kids for excellent swim training and a friendly environment at PSA. Various times at several pools: Lord Byng, Kerrisdale, Vancouver Aquatic Centre. There is also a lifesaving sport program for more experienced swimmers looking for more skills and opportunities. Check it out on their website. Link to Spring term registration |
